HARVARD RADCLIFFE SUMMER FELLOWSHIP 2021
On June 30, 2021, Susanne Kühn will make a presentation about work she is undertaking during the 2021 Summer Fellowship Program at Harvard Radcliffe Institute (HRI). Originally a fellow in 2000–2001, she is one of 47 HRI alumni fellows who have been invited back to participate in the summer program, now in its ninth year.
For the first time since its founding in 2013, in 2021 the Summer Fellowship Program will be entirely virtual. In part a necessity due to travel restrictions, holding the fellows’ talks and activities online has the added benefit of allowing more international fellows to participate. Kühn, one of the international fellows, joins the program from Germany.
In her online presentation, titled Flash Realism, Kühn will discuss a series of paintings, begun during the first pandemic lockdown, that features her studio and other places familiar to her. The paintings are characterized by the physical absence of people yet simultaneously thrive on human presence, which is expressed in the legibility of a complex, multilayered life situation and its various digital channels of communication. Realism in painting demands an aesthetic language, a formal concept, and specific content. During the summer fellowship, Kühn will research the history of the aesthetic form in realism and its potential for her studio practice under the current circumstances.
