Being a Woman Artist!
Starting today August 8, 2023, the first room of MNK's permanent collection will be dedicated to self-portraits by women artists. Although it has been possible for women to become artists by profession for about 100 years, works by women artists are still underrepresented in public collections – also at the Museum für Neue Kunst, only about 25 percent of the artists represented are read as female.
On display are self-portraits by Eva Eisenlohr (1891-1977), Fridel Dethleffs-Edelmann (1899-1982), Gretel Haas-Gerber (1903-1998), Melitta Schnarrenberger (1909-1996), Maria Lassnig (1919-2014), and Susanne Kühn (*1969). The artworks were created at different times, but they all radiate "I see myself as an artist".
